Do You Have a Signature Scent?

Sometimes, when I’m reading a novel or watching a movie, there will be a strong female character- you know, she’s smart, put together, knows what she likes.

In a lot of ways, it’s what I aspire to- quietly confident in my own skin (I have to say, just being 30 has done a lot for this goal! But I digress.)

In When Harry Met Sally (the best movie ever), Billy Crystal says to Meg Ryan, “I love that after I spend the day with you, I can still smell your perfume on my clothes. And I love that you are the last person I want to talk to before I go to sleep at night. And it’s not because I’m lonely, and it’s not because it’s New Year’s Eve.” Usually, I’ll think to myself something like “hmm. Do other people wear a certain perfume every day?

If I had to think about what I usually smell like, I would hope it would be something like soap and chocolate chip cookies (just keeping it practical- no Chanel No 5 over here). These days, I would have guessed it’s actually hand sanitizer and Lysol.

A few months ago, when times were simpler and we were still giving hugs freely, my neighbour leaned in to hug hello. It was a cold day in Vancouver, and we were meeting for a pastry and coffee before I headed in to work for a late shift.

Somewhat predictably, I had tried to stuff too many things into my morning, and instead of having time for a run and a shower, I ended up with a light yoga workout and dry shampoo before dashing out to meet her. Fast forward 15 minutes and, mid-hug, she says “mm- I love that scent you’re always wearing!”.

(Can I just say another thank you to the inventor of dry shampoo).

Briefly I considered the possibility that I need to actually wash my hair more, but that thought was quickly replaced with another: It was finally happening! This was my movie moment of being someone who can be recognized by a certain scent.

So there you go! My signature is “light, clean, and really good at soaking up oil and sweat!” Honestly, better than smelling like a yoga mat. I’ll take it.
