It might be a bit of a cliche, but since I’ve been reflecting on turning 30 I’ve realized a few things. The biggest difference I notice between now and 10 years ago is that I know what I like- and I feel pretty comfortable with it! These are some of my favourite products- my beauty uniform! I’m definitely not a beauty connoisseur (far from it!) but this is a list of the things I consistently finish and buy again.
Disclaimer- I know this isn’t pandemic-related, but I’m feeling more like a distraction is needed today! Back tomorrow with a day-in-the-life post.
I went to see a dermatologist 3 or 4 years ago, and she told me that all my skin struggles were related to being dry- that even when my skin seemed more oily, it was because it was trying to moisturize itself! The best thing I ever did for my skin was start drinking enough water! The second best thing was the gentle moisturizer, with SPF, that she turned me onto- I have bought the EltaMD UV Clear (and AM Therapy!) at least 10 times and rarely go a day without wearing it. I love adding the Drunk Elephant D-Bronzi to my moisturizer for a slight evening and brightening effect. Definitely not going to give you any coverage, but it’s a nice overall look.
I recently discovered Sunday Riley and have really liked a few products- the first is Autocorrect. This is an eye cream that promises to de-puff and fix dark circles, which, hello, is everything I need in an eye cream. I put it on in the mornings, though the directions are morning and night. I do feel like I can see a difference! Sunday Riley is actually known for Good Genes, their lactic acid treatment, which helps with brightening and fine lines. Some of my lines are also of the less-fine variety (ahem :- ) but I think this helps! Finally, I use the Sunday Riley CEO Vitamin C serum alternating with the Luna sleeping oil– I like using these at night, each of them once per week or so. Both help with making skin look brighter and plumper, and reducing pore size. I can’t really use a retinol product (the Luna is an oil-based retinol) more than that because my skin is sensitive, but highly recommend both of these!
My tried-and-true hand cream is Skinfood– I basically put it everywhere. On the rest of my bod, I like using apricot oil in the winter. In the summer I usually choose Clinique body butter– it works well, plus it’s scent-free (good for wearing to work), and I can get it at Shoppers using Optimum points! Win-win.
A surprise to absolutely no one, I don’t wear much makeup. I’ve found a couple of favourite products that I usually have on hand, but one thing I’ve really embraced is being bare-faced! I did love the look and easiness of eyelash extensions but they are too time consuming and expensive to maintain at this point- 1-2 hours every 3 weeks is more than I can commit to. I did have them for our wedding and honeymoon, which was perfect!
Nowadays I use the Glossier Lash Slick mascara because it works great and it’s inexpensive. I like using their Stretch concealer in the summer and Makeup For Ever #30 in the winter. When I do wear more on my eyes, I use the Smashbox palette (either nudie pic, which is matte, or #GOALS, which has shimmer!) and the Stila smudgestick eyeliner. If I wear blush, I like NARS, but I’m more likely to have nothing OR a swipe of highlighter (Glossier Haloscope).
Finally, for lips I LOVE La Neige lip conditioner. For the one time per month I wear lipstick, I like the Dior Lip Glow (a gift from my aunt, which I also wore on my wedding day and continue to love) or Glossier Generation G in Crush or Cake.
I tried several salon shampoos (and I did like Aveda’s damage remedy line) but I have to say my hair is happiest with Dove– and at literally 4$ my bank account is, too :- ). I use the anti-frizz formula for both shampoo and conditioner.
Two things here- one is that I keep my nails short, both because I just like them that way and because I think it’s cleaner for work. The other is that I don’t wear a lot of nail polish because it really dries out my nails. My favourite thing to wear is Dior Nail Glow, which is lightly hydrating, can be put on at home and dries in about 30 seconds. Plus it leaves my nails looking just slightly more shiny and pink. On my feet I have been trying to get a pedicure once every six weeks or so, mostly because running tends to be hard on my toes. Of course social distancing is putting a cramp in that, but what can you do!
I take Vitamin D and omega-3 every day, in gummy format (SO much more fun than pills) and magnesium, which I’ve found is good for my heart and for sleep. While I think everyone in Canada should take Vitamin D daily, make sure you ask your doc about other supplements.
Whew! Kind of looks like a lot for someone who considers herself a product minimalist! Do you have any favourites? xo
