Five years ago a few awesome ladies started organizing a run to support the Downtown East Side Women’s Centre. Last year, I joined them in organizing the run, and over the years this amazing community has donated over $25,000 to the DEWC programming! Here are some photos of this year’s event, and more info about the centre, if you’d like to see!
Vancouver’s Downtown East Side is one of the most challenged neighbourhoods in Canada, and the opoid crisis has only increased the difficulties faced by many of its residents. The DTES Women’s Centre provides a safe space for women to come together, basic needs (including shelter beds, hot meals, clothing, advocacy, and other supports!) and a sense of community. Although many of their programs receive government funding, their meal program is supported through donations only.
At the start, the DEWC meal program served 100-200 lunches per day, and five years later they are serving > 600 lunches daily and have expanded to dinners as well.
I was so happy to be a part of Run to Give this year and am so, so grateful to be part of a community that comes together to give back.
If you’d like to donate (or check out our progress!) you can do so here– donations are tax-deductable and the centre is really transparent about where the money goes.
Thank you so much for reading! xo
